So… My husband is working late again and I have to fend for myself :(… and after a looonnggg exhausting day, I wanted to have some comfort food. For me… today it is Tomato Kichadi. It is a side dish that goes amazingly well with Idlis and Dosas. I have seen this being made only in my family. Guess it’s one of those recipes that gets passed from generation to generation. Don’t be scared, it is not complicated, it is super easy to make, you just need like 5-6 ingredients and some 15 mins and its done.
Ripe Tomatoes – 4 big ones
Green Chillies – 4
Onions – 2 medium ones
Salt to taste
Mustard – 1 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Broken Red Chillies – 2
Curry leaves – little
Asafoetida – a pinch (optional)
Oil – 2 tsp
We are going to cook and peel the tomatoes, so to make the job easy, make a little cross with a knife before boiling as shown in this pic and you can peel them in a jiffy.
- Boil the tomatoes and green chillies together until they are cooked. Cool them down. Peel the tomatoes and grind it with the cooked chillies.
- Finely chop the onions. Heat oil in a pan, add the tempering items. Though the red chillies and asafoetida are optional, adding them gives a really nice flavor. Then add the chopped onions and saute until they are golden brown.
- Add the tomato chilli puree and salt and let it boil for 5-7 mins.
- Viola… My comfort food is done. Steaming hot idlis, tomato kichadi with a dash of gingelly oil and I am in food heaven.
